Dibakar Banerjee has made tasks tougher for himself in the times to come. Why? Didn’t I say that Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a pure class?Alright, let me clearly state that Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a pure class.
Uptill now, whenever anyone spoke of Byomkesh Bakshy, Rajit Kapoor emerged out of our imaginations claded in dhoti and kurta. There had been many Byomkesh Bakshys in bengali cinema but Rajit Kapoor was someone who was the most famous one and universally accepted. Sushant Singh Rajput has managed to break that image a bit and has sneaked in to the character but he must not be credited for this effort solely. Dibakar Banerjee has a great role to play in this. There are two Byokeshes we are talking about and both of them are class apart.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is what it is -a cinematic brilliance not just because of Byomkesh Babu only but Dr Anukool Guha, Arijit Bannerjee and satyawati too. Neeraj Kabi while playing Dr. Guha has absolutely nailed it. I am running out of metaphors to relate how amazingly he has gone about doing his job. For actors like Neeraj Kabi, it is better off watching them act than reading or writing about them.
Nikos Andritsakis’s cinematography is eye pleasing much like Sachin Bhoir’s art direction. At no point in the film that you feel like you are not in the calcutta of the 1940s.
Three things that set Dibakar Banerjee’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy apart from other detective stories is the story treatment, casting and music respectively. It is the beauty of the script which will not allow any comparison with Sherlock Holmes. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a very fresh storytelling and the pair of Urmi Juvekar – Dibakar must be applauded for the same.
Casting is the second best thing. In a detective movie, every character holds importance and knowing how Dibakar works hard on the characters by going into minute details- even the side characters- the casting has only added to the brilliance.
Lastly, the music. The soul of the film is the background score. And who does Dibakar turn to in order to do this magic in his film – the beautiful Sneha Khanwalkar. I think that is enough said. Rest is a complete experience. You will absolutely adore the rock music being played loud in the background as Byomkesh babu runs in the chaotic Streets of calcutta of 1940s. If the background score was any less good, the film would have fallen apart.
‘Red is the color of truth’ says Dr. Guha at the climax. The truth is Byomkesh Bakshy has arrived big time and how. Go get your share of truth.
